Two Wales,UK Cameras are now ONLINE!

Wales, UK

We are glad to inform you that two cameras were installed and put into operation in Wales, UK. They are installed at the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Bridgend and their station codes are UK008K and UK008J. You can check their archives by clicking on their names. We are happy to welcome the school on board and below you can find a couple of photos. We wish pupils a lot of fun with meteor pictures and videos! We thank Paul Roche and Edward Cooper for leading this!

Four South African Cameras are now ONLINE!

South Africa

On 31 August we achieved a major milestone with first light achieved at Laingsburg High School in the Western Cape of South Africa.  Cameras ZA0008 and ZA0009 were finally added to the pipeline from 1 September 2024.

This follows first light at Touwsrivier Primary School (cameras ZA0006 and ZA0007), which achieved its first meteor detections on 4 June 2024, and was added to the pipeline on 7 August 2024. You can have a look at their data here.

With the cameras now capturing nightly images of the night sky and with their fields of view overlapped, both schools are able to determine orbits and radiants of the meteors observed from both locations, and in so doing contribute to our understanding of our Earth’s meteor showers.

Below you can observe coverage in the height of 100 km of these cameras.

South African Cameras Installations

South Africa

The four GMN project meteor cameras donated to ASSA (Astronomical Society of Southern Africa) by an anonymous benefactor for use by schools in Southern Africa were installed and aligned at Touwsrivier Primary and Laingsburg Secondary Schools just before the Easter school holidays. The photos show the cameras being handed over to the respective Principals on behalf the GMN project and ASSA.

There are 29 participants from 4 schools in Laingsburg, Touwsrivier, Hermanus and Gansbaai with the gender split slightly favouring the ladies.

The handover address obviously mentioned what Meteors are, where they come from and why their study is important. Some background was given about the Global Meteor Network as a citizen science group of volunteers around the world with objective of detecting meteors under the slogan No Meteor Undetected. They operate more than 800 cameras to record meteors, calculate their trajectories, support meteor and solar system science, and develop new techniques in meteor science.

Some of the facts mentioned elicited strong responses:
☼ Surprise. The fact that several hundred tonnes of small particles enter the Earth’s atmosphere every day puts the number of visible meteors every cloudless night into perspective and explains the GMN’s slogan of No Meteor Undetected.
☼ Awe & Excitement. The new skills which participants will learn as part of the project is both mouth-watering and daunting, as is the prospect of possibly contributing to the development of new techniques in meteor science.
☼ Amazement. The fact that these four cameras are the first for this project on the African continent elicited almost disbelief.
☼ Appreciation & Determination. All participating learners were extremely appreciative of being able to be part of such a meaningful project.

This first small step will now be followed by the hard slog of getting the cameras operational, understanding the results obtained and how to display and utilise the data. A steep learning curve lies ahead, but at least one that will be tackled with enthusiasm and vigour.

FSG-Preetz’s DE000V is online! https://globalmeteornetwork.org/outreach/2024/03/30/fsg-preetzs-de000v-is-online/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fsg-preetzs-de000v-is-online Sat, 30 Mar 2024 17:40:17 +0000 https://globalmeteornetwork.org/outreach/?p=936

FSG-Preetz’s DE000V is online!

Preetz, Germany

On March 1st the astronomy class of FSG-Preetz finally had first light as contributors to the GMN network.

Having worked on the project since early September, and finally being able to install the camera on December 22nd, our group’s excitement was palpable as we realised that our efforts had finally paid off. As the camera was delivered as a kit, the first upload took some effort. Our group put in many hours of extra-curricular work to solve the problems along the way. Over the past six months, us students have learnt a lot about how the Raspberry Pi, the network and the IP camera work.

Now that the camera is up and running, we are happy to say, that DE000V is now part of the wider GMN network. This makes us the first group of students to successfully upload data to the GMN server. With that our focus now shifts to astronomical analysis of the data.

Our documentation can be found here (in German) : http://wiki.linux-astronomie.de/doku.php?id=ceres
Here you can find the archive of successful data uploads to the GMN-server: https://globalmeteornetwork.org/weblog/DE/DE000V

South African schools update

South Africa

Tim Cooper prepared packages containing 2 of our meteor cameras for each school to be shipped soon. These are the plug-and-play versions and are meant for Touwsrivier Primary School and Laingsburg High School which will overlap each other to pair meteors. Pierre de Villiers will help locally with the installation. We’ll keep you posted on the progress.

“First Light” through the meteorite camera of Gymnasium Untergriesbach

Gymnasium Untergriesbach, Germany

After several weeks of tinkering and research, on the afternoon of October 24th the time had finally come: There was “First Light” through the meteorite camera, and it looked into many happy faces.

Since the meteorite camera is not a finished product but was handed over as a kit with standard components, there was a lot to learn for the students involved. Especially for younger people, the know-how required for building the camera should not be underestimated. With the help of the instructions provided by the Global Meteor Network Outreach Project and the active support of the teacher, the construction of the camera went smoothly.
Through this project, students also learn how to use the Raspberry Pi single-board computer, gain experience with network technology and gain insights into digital photography.
The next milestone is the final assembly of the device and its placement near our school’s observatory dome. Particular attention will be paid to appropriate power and network supplies outdoors, as well as good weather protection.
